Unable to install Word 97 from WindowsXP

1 Attempt to uninstall Word 97 via add remove > install only (will not allow uninstall).

2 Attempt to install Word 97 over itself after giving serial # > "Unable to open file K:\~MSSetup.T\~msstfof.t\rnscIn97.opc for reading. Make sure file exists and has correct format."

3 OK > "Object 5325 your setup files may be damaged, try restarting the settup program from where you originally ran it.
4 OK > "Unable to open file K: -----" as above. K: is my backup partition and should not be related to install problems.

This all began(the reason I wanted to uninstall Word 97) because:

Opening a Word 97 document always > message "C:\...overview3.doc is being used by G Watts. Do you want to make a copy?"
I click OK and I can use the document but after changing it:

Save > "This file is in use by another appliction or user. C:\...My Documents\overview3.doc"

OK > save as > "this file is read only", OK > does not save, Must cancel without the save.

I will apreciate any advice as to correcting this inability to save or as to how to uninstall Word 97.
