Unable to install service packs

We are having a problem installing SP6a on several NT 4.0 workstations that have SP4 on. We have tried running the update from the CD, from the local disk in both network admin and local workstation admin profiles. The installation in all instances gets as far as the tick to install / upgrade service pack. So it goes past the verify OK. The workstation has ample disk space available.

Anyone got any ideas?
