I've owned a couple of these for a few years and occasionally have found difficulty getting either to work on a specific PC at some time. currently the PC has been freshly setup with XP Pro and another USB printer works fine. However I cannot get the icon for the7100 to appear in PRINTERS no matter what. It shows up in Device Manager under USB devices simply as panasonic printer but says it is working properly. I've used the Panasonic KX-P7100 unistaller from their site ( it suggests that this problem is not unknown) and I've gone thru the registry and found no entries. The plug'n'play detects it every time. I've used new cables and tried different ports. It will always install and work on the parallel port but that's not desirable as its slower and is already populated with another printer.
Any suggestions, please?

If you have install software for the printer, try this:

First, remove/uninstall any references of the printer, including removing the print driver under printers and faxes, File -> Server properties -> drivers..

Then, unplug and turn off the printer.

Install the software for your printer (driver should be included in the software).

If your install software asks, plug up and turn back on the printer when you get to that point (otherwise, just leave it off/unplugged until driver/software install finished).

If your install software doesn't prompt for the printer to be turned on/connected, then I'd also suggest first rebooting the machine, and THEN connect/turn on the printer.

I don't have a Panasonic, but with my current HP multifunction printer, if I don't do it that way, it tends to have problems in the install process.

Thanks... that is the way I usually get it to install, and I agree that with HP printers it is totally necessary to do it that way..

Strangely enough it seems now that ANY USB printer will not install on this particular PC, I got the parallel interface to work only by totally removing all printers ( including another parallel Kyocera) then doing it the way you mention but for LPT1.. It almost seems like the other other parallel printer was stopping it.. but that heads off into another needless direction since both printers are now co-existing..
I have to say that of all the printers I've ever had to install.. and there has been a great many, the Panasonic lasers (KXP series) have been the most troublesome.. I only continue to use the KX-P7100 for its convenient duplexing..
I should mention in closing that I recently did a clean installation of XP Pro and could not get any of the 3 7100's to succesfully install as the first up printer under USB.. but had done so previously on that same configured PC.. Weird, but true..
