From time to time I will do a "print screen" or an Alt + "print screen" and try to paste the result into Paintshop Pro 9. It then fails with a dialog box that says "unable to get the data from the clipboard"

Only a reboot seems to fix the problem. A logout/login is insufficient.

I googled, but no one seems to have the answer. It may be keyboard related as copy/paste work fine it just seems to be the "print screen" button is not copying the screen to the paste buffer correctly. It's not pasting nothing because I can empty the paste buffer and then press "print screen" and get the message.

It would be nice to cure this issue, rather than fixing it with a reboot.

Machine is running XP SP2 fullky up to date and virus free. Details below.

Just from looking at the Google posts you refer to, suggests that it may be a bug within PaintShop Pro. Have you approached the company concerned for their thoughts on the matter?

Paint Shop: Unable to get the data from the clipboard

Unable to get data from the clipboard

Print screen Problem

You could try another keyboard or use the built-in On Screen Keyboard via the Windows Key + U.

If you run clipbrd.exe (Start Run) you can see what data is being held in the clip board.

Do you get this error if you run the application (PSP) as an Administrator?

Thank you Linney. I shall certainly use your suggestions next time it happens. Whenever that is - could be days, weeks, or today! LOL

I will be interested to see whether "print screen" works on the screen keyboard. I never thought of that, brilliant idea.

I should have said - once the error occurs I can't paste a screenshot (print screen) into any application, they all give the same error or just do nothing. For instance, Paint will give the same error whereas Word simply does nothing.

To answer your questions.

Corel, who have taken over PSP merely suggested I buy their new version. But I am quite happy with V9.

Once it happens, if I logout and login as Admin the issue is still there.

I will try "run as" as well, just to see.

This may be of interest, In fact I never knew about this until i just tried. Now it may be a quirk of my Pc but;
I'm running extended desktop:

Alt + Print Screen only seems to do highlighted items
Shift + Print Screen does the entire page. Both paste ok in Paint Shop Pro 5

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

The Print Screen key [PrtScn] takes a snapshot of the entire computer screen and copies it to the Windows Clipboard. Hold down Alt and press the Print Scrn key to capture just the active window.

Press Alt, Shift and Print Screen together and you will (after a warning message) have your desktop theme changes to a high contrast one!

PSP 9 is 32 bit. You may be copying images at 16bit and pasting into PSP's 32 bit clipboard. Try setting your Display Properties (Color Quality) to 32 bits. This should solve the problem.

As explained already - it is all apps, not just PSP and my screen resolution is on 32 bit anyway. The problem manifests itself after I have been booted for a long time. Not always even then. However because of my issues with AVG forcing reboots - explained here in this thread. I now reboot nearly every day so the problem has not had a chance to occur. When I get the time I think I will switch to Avast - although that has its own issues. Oh well - such is live! LOL

Now I have managed to sort out AVG the problem has re-manifested itself.

I followed linney's suggestions and started the clipbook viewer and also the on screen keyboard. Using the on screen keyboard made no difference, but the clipbook viewer showed the following error message after attempting to copy a window using [Alt]+[PrtScn] whether using the real or onscreen keyboard.

ClipBook View cannot display the information in its current format or there is not enough memory to display it. Quit one or more applications to increase the available memory, and then try again.

My PC has been booted for 5 Days, 19 Hours, 1 Minutes, 16 Seconds.

I found that if I changed the clipbook viewer view to BitMap it showed the copied window. But PSP still said "unable to get data from clipboard".

I then saved the image in clipbook viewer by going to file/save and found that I could now paste the image into PSP using Ctrl+C! I then found that this would work on a per screenshot basis providing a save the image first! This was while clipbook viewer was displaying its error message!

Taskmanager shows that I have over 500MB of RAM available for use. So it is not a memory issue. So, go figure? What is going on here? Have I stumbled on an XP memory issue that doesn't manifest itself if you reboot daily?

I had the same problem and followed linney's advice to open the clipbrd.exe from the run dialog. After the Clipbook Viewer loaded it told me that it's service was not started.

I started the clibBook service (had to start two dependencies: Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM also)

Then restarted clibbrd.exe.

After it stopped freaking out with the ...cannot display... error message you mentioned above, I clicked on the clipboard window then clicked Edit and selected Del. It asked me if I was sure I wanted to delete the contents of the clipboard. I clicked ok and copy/paste began working for me once more.

This is my first foray into Tek-Tips, so apologies if protocol is incorrect.
For years I have been writing documents using fullscreen [PrintScrn] and active screen [Alt+PrintScrn] snapshots.
I have an icon on my QuickLaunch toolbar for ClipBook Viewer because I like to check before I paste snapshots.
Suddenly in mid-May 2008 I started getting the [Clipboard Viewer cannot display....] message. I have found that in spite of the message (and no image) in Viewer, the image will paste into WordPad, then copy that back to ClipBoard, then paste into other applications (Quattro-Pro & Excel spreadsheets, WordPerfect, etc.) Still a nuisance, but easier than re-booting frequently, perhaps. APB.

I never posted back did I? Well not until now - LOL

For whatever reason my problems were AVG related - I have now been using Avast for some time and although it has its own peculiarities, on the whole I prefer it to AVG.

But the main thing is I no longer have any issues with the clipboard not working.

So I conclude that in my case this issue was caused by AVG for others it may be some other piece of software. You will have to do your own investigating. But anti-malware software could well be the most likely candidate.

Thanks, linney.
I have tried to find SFC. Search of WinXP-HELP shows the topic but seems to be specific to Win-98.
Used Win-Explorer to search for file Sfc.exe mentioned in HELP, but not found.

You can run SFC from the run command or from the command line (Start>Run>type CMD in the box and press OK.

SFC.EXE lives in C:\WINDOWS\system32

You may have these folders 'hidden' which is why you can't find it.

This is what SFC has to say about itself.

C:\>sfc /?

Thanks for info about SFC. That's the same place clipbrd.exe was hidden when I first went looking for it years ago, but I didn't know about SFC. This may come in handy sometime in the future. Now for the great Clipboard mystery:
My Viewer is now working perfectly (touch wood) all by itself! I used [Printscrn] key to copy the fullscreen with your message, and it copied into ClipBook Viewer perfectly. So have all the Error Reports going to MicroSoft born fruit? Has everybody else with this problem found their Viewer is suddenly working properly?
My thanks to all for hints and tips in this forum. APB.
