Unable to get FTP, Telnet, or console access to Motorola AIX node

This happens after the system has been up around 11 - 13 days. No alarms or OM reports indicate there is any problem. However the node gives "connection refused" for telnet sessions. When attempting to get in through the local console the error "INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly. Check for possible errors. id: cons "/usr/sbin/getty /dev/console" " is received. FTP sessions are denied before a login can be given.

Existing applications continue to function, and log files do not show any abnormalities. The only way to recover is to powercycle the node. This is happening in more than one node and they are running AIX 4.3

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I think the problem may be the network resources or running out of mbuffs.

pull your console cable, and check it for proper connectivity.

once the console cable is pulling, the system *should* return to normal behavior.

if the console cable is improperly connected, or generating noise that the system is interpreting as attempts to come online, it can create the effect you see with getty.

That is something that i've tried. It is possible that it could be a secondary symptom. If the system is out of resources it will try to spawn a login prompt repeatedly when you connect through the console because it never opens.

Another thing you might look at is if paging space is getting full. AIX starts denying new process creation/new memory allocation when swap utilization starts getting high. That could cause /bin/login to fail to start, but the times I've seen that happen, getty is unresponsive as well.

here is command to edit ftp and telnet access using command "smitty ipsec4" prequisite for the command is fileset with name ipsec4.for ftp use 121 and for telnet use 123 port number.
