I hooked up the jetdirect box(EN3700) to a network port and plugged in the USB cable to the laserjet 1012. The status light is lit and the USB printer light comes on. The 100 Mbps light is solid green, but when I push the test button nothing happens. I tried a second identical jetdirect box and got the same results. Am I doing something wrong? Please help the pressure is causing me many pains.

I believe that the LJ1012 is what is known as a 'host-based' printer (it does not have much intelligence built-in) and, as such, suspect that it is not compatible with JetDirect; i.e. it will only work when directly-connected to a suitable host.

Thanks for the info. Where do you find this information? The packaging from the Jetdirect box says it is compatible with HP Laserjet 101x, which apparently does not include the 1012. I have been unable to wade through all the information on HP's web site to find the answer.

The following link gives some details of the 1010, 1012 and 1015 devices, including JetDirect compatibility.

From this, it appears that the 1010 and 1012 are host-based printers, whilst the 1015 has more built-in intelligence, and will understand a PCL5e print stream.
