Unable to generate book index

I'm trying to generate the index for a 500-page book using InDesign 2.0. After I select the settings I want, it starts the process but freezes up before it gets done processing all the index markers. Does somebody know how to deal with this problem?

Running Windows XP. The computer easily meets all system requirements, so that shouldn't be the problem.
