Hi all,

I am getting error when loged on from a win98se client machine. It says No Domain was available to verify the password. The server was working nice earlier.

Also when i tried to create a new user / change password from user manger for domain i am getting the error as
network path was not found.

Also I tried to the same from Administrative wizard i got error while creating a new user as
unable to find domain controller for this domain.

Can any one help me ? I need help ASAP. From:

Can you PING your domain controller? Maybe the server is off-line.

How many domain controllers do you have (it sounds like just one)?

First make sure you domain controller is on-line. If you only have one domain controller and it down, all of your users will be having the same problem. It is important to have more then one domain controller for fault tolerance.

Apoorva,

Sounds like your PDC is actually down or the connection to it is down. Also sounds like you don't have a BDC. I would first go to the PDC server and check that it is running, then check its connectivity py pinging the gateway or some other computers on your network.

can you give us a brief description of your present network setup?

Thanks for yr replies .

Ping is not working. Server is NT 4.0 With SP 6a.
It has dual booting between win98se and NT.
Connection is ok as I am able to connect to pc in peer to peer workgroup when booted in win98se.

I dont know much abt PDC and BDC. but when I go to domain controller it displayes only one option i.e. DOMAIN. I think this is PDC. I dont hv n e other.

Server it self is working nice. Only one thing is that i am getting one error at startup everytime. In event viewer the errors are registered as

1. The Storage management Portmapper service failed to start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

2. The Network Remote Exec service failed to start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

3. The Network Backup and Recover server serice failed to start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

4. The Realtek RTL 8029 PCI adapter driver service failed to start due to the following error.

The device attached to system is not functioning.

Now what to to do further ?

Is it due to lan card driver is not installed properly ?

Pls help.

BINGO! it's the NIC alright! event#4 clearly states it.

solution: make sure that you have the appropriate driver of the NIC for Windows NT. uninstall the present driver and install the new and correct one. restart the server and enjoy.

BTW, you do have a domain configured.

Thanks ! I will see the lan card issue.

Pls tell me how to take a BDC ?

I think If I would have had it , there would not have been such problem. From:

yes it would... you need a PDC for authentication... a BDC only speeds up authentication, but it can't replace a PDC...

right! a BDC will authenticate network logons if the PDC is unavailable. users can still go on with their work but you cannot make any changes to the SAM. BDC's are read-only replicas of the SAM. to make changes or add objects, you need to have the PDC available.

how to make a BDC?

simple. get hold of a PC and install NT server in it and select backup domain controller as the major function. later during setup you will be prompted to enter the domain name this bdc will join. have fun!

did you reboot the computers AFTER you changed the card and brought the server back up? NT may be reporting the server as unavailable due to the fact is was not available at original boot up.?? Keith Buchanan

Yahh ! I did rebooted the server After Installing the new Lan card.

And I am still getting these error in event viewer.

1. The Storage management Portmapper service failed to
start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

2. The Network Remote Exec service failed to start due to
following error.
The system cannot find the path specified

3. The Network Backup and Recover server serice failed to
start due to the following error.
The system cannot find the path specified.

I dont know what is use of Storage Management, Remote Exec and backup and Recover server. I am Using NT Just for by ORACLE Server for my project.

Ping is working very fine. I have checked it properly.

Still I am not able to log on from my win98 node.

Interestingly , If I share my hdd on node I can access it from server. When i used "Find Computer" from node it showed me my NT server, but from when i tried to enter , it says \\nt_server is not accessible. user is not loged on. and then a webpage opens res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/navcancl.htm

And I am not able to log on as it says password provided for the user in not valid, while there is no passowrd given for that user.

Thanks and reply ASAP.

Also Pls let me know that is there any way to create BDC Now ? i.e. after installation is done and server is running fine. Also let me know about one thing Emergency Rescue Disk created is always bootable ? When this problem ocured i tried to boot through ERD but is said it is not bootable. So Do I need to make it bootable ?

Pls reply. From:

the NT4.0 ERD is never Bootable you will have to run "winnt /b" and specify repair in order to make use of the ERD.
to create a BDC you must always have a PDC you cannot "Demote" a PDC to a BDC but you can promote a BDC to a PDC if the PDC becomes inoperable.
hope this helps

Also I am not able to logon from client PC ( Win98se)
I am getting ping from both the sides. I can see client machines shared harddisk from server but when i try to log on from client i get error message as password provided for the user in not valid, while there is no passowrd given for that user !
