Hi all,

This is the situation,

A user (for namesake, we shall call him Jack) has left our company and therefore, a rule has been created to forward all emails sent to Jack to be forwarded to our boss. Jack works in IT and receives many alerts - internally and from external clients.

Our boss is receiving a forwarded email sent to Jack and wants to block that email. However, when we open the email and try to determine the sender by double clicking on the Sender name (e.g.desktop1), Outlook does not allow this. The sender also seems to be a hostname of a machine possibly from outside our network. Is it possible to find out where this email is coming from and better still, be able to determine the sender address?

I have looked at the email headers and the return path seems to be desktop1@ourdomainname.com. Does this mean it is from our network?

Hope my question makes sense and hope someone can assist.

Thanks in advance

If it says it's from desktop1@ourdomainname.com, it's likely coming from there. But more importantly, how was this "rule" created? If you're using Exchange, the account should be configured to delivery to the boss (only). No rule need be applied.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we are using Exchange.

The rule was created on our Exchange server so that all emails going to Jack@ourdomainname.com will be forwarded to our boss. I am not sure how it was set up but I believe it would be set up from Exchange Server?

What we are trying to achieve is to find out who is this sender and stop it from sending anymore alerts to that Jack's email address.

I am just wondering, is it possible that this alert is being sent from an external source, not connected to our network and that an email alias has been used to define the host "desktop1" from the client side exchange server or since the return address is desktop1@ourdomainname.com, could the alias have been created on our end?

My apologies if I am not making any sense, but I am not all that familiar with Exchange :)

Outlook has the capabilities of looking at the e-mail headers from Internet e-mails. Right-click the e-mail, choose Options. At the bottom will be the header information.

Hope this helps!
