Unable to delete emails in Outlook Express 1

A computer running Windows XP on a workgroup network. When an email is deleted in Outlook Express, rather than being moved to the Deleted Items folder, a line is put through it. This has been going on for a few weeks and the inbox is is full of stuff that needs to be deleted. Any ideas?

Thanks. I deleted all the folders that were causing problems (after removing the wanted mail to another folder) and the folders recreated themselves and are now OK.
