I have a folder on my d drive for program files.

Suddenly, I cannot write to it. Gives the message unable to create new folder, access is denied.

I am logged in with the admin account and never had any problems before.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How is Drive D formatted, FAT32 or NTFS?
How many folders do you have on the root of drive D:?

Download subinacl.exe from Microsoft, and place in the folder \Windows\System32:

Then do a Start, Run, CMD

subinacl /subdirectories D: /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=EVERYONE=f

(All on one line. Note: there is a space character after the =f and prior to the /grant= for each option statement.)

This will take a few minutes to process. When finished, reboot and try your creating a folder on drive D.

See if this applies?

814684 - You Cannot Specify a Folder Name When You Create a New Folder on a Mapped Network Drive

Even if you account is an administrative account and supposedly part of the Administrators Group, you could try adding your actual user name to the Security tab's permissions list of Drive D:. That assumes that you can access D: drive in the first place? Make sure your username is listed in the Administrator's Group in the Computer Management/ Local Users and Groups.

thanks for the advice but I am still not having any luck.

It's only this one folder on the d drive.

any other suggestions appreciated.

What is the name of the folder?
There are names that should not be used.

Have you tried running ChkDsk /r on this drive, you can do it from inside Windows by right-clicking your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

HOW TO: Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

Can you create a folder from Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode using the built-in Administrator user?

I ran the error check with no result.

The name of the folder is Program Files.

I used to be able to create folders in the directory. Also, Norton Files are in this directory -- if it makes a difference.

Thanks.

These are slightly off topic although the first link does mention Norton/Symantec, the others may be useful as a future reference?

Thanks for the replies.

It was a checkbox in the latest Norton Internet Security.

Protect My Product. Would not allow for creating folders in the same Program Files Directory as the Norton Product.

Thanks Again.
