unable to connect to symantec

I had norton sw 2003 and my subscription was supposed to run out in oct. So I started recently to get a red x over my norton AV icon on the bottom right of the screen. It would disappear after awhile. Then it stayed. now I cannot do live update or even access the symantec site?????
What's the deal???? Am I infected??????
