Does anyone know why i can't run openview from kde 3.0 ksession. i'm exporting my display per standard display-ip address:0
but get error: can't open display, any help would be appreciated!

Hi yardofale, do you have any firewalls in the middle?
Are you tunneling X-Windows through ssh?Or just using telnet?
Have you typed "xhost +" on the management server?
Please, let us know...

Hey vlan52,

No firewalls involved, I'm connecting to the server running HPOV via ssh both machines are on the same subnet, xhost should allow me to connect, I'm thinking it has something to do with the xwindows settings on the FreeBSD machine I'm using to connect? but i'm not sure what that would be?

Thanks,

Well, actually haven't been using FreeBSD for a while, then it must be something on your X-Windows config, under your KDE desktop I guess...
Even if you try to export a "xclock" doesn't work?
Just to check if is something related to Openview (when you run opc, as an example, there are several variables to export and may help you, LANG, etc...) or related to your X-Windows config.

yeah, that was my thought also :) I can run xclcock without a problem. pretty sure it's not with OV, I have other kde clients using the same box. how would i run opc? for these variables? another thought was the colors that hpov uses, 256? not sure how to get my xwindows to use the same?

drinking knowledge is like drinking good ale, you can never get enough

Yes, OV will try to use 256 colors, if it can't, is going to show whatever it can use.
Do you get any other errors besides "can't open display"?
Anything related to the fonts perhaps? That is a common issue...

I guess that's not it then? I don't get any errors other than the 'error: can't open display" would OV generate or log any errors pertaining to my attempt to connect?

thanks for tyring to help me out Vlan52, appreciate it!

No problem, could you check on the /var/dt/Xerrors logfile?(in your management server of course).
There may be a clue there of what is going on, ok?
