OK heres the problem. I have 2 PCs. One with win2k adv server and the other is winME. They both have NICs and are configured as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respectively. The subnet mask for both is 255.255.255.0. I then connect them through my known good hub. When I attempt to ping the other NIC, my request times out. Do I have something configured wrong? And do I need DNS and a gateway installed for just 2 PC's?

Well, are you sure your cables are good? Niether cable is a crossover cable? Do you have link lights on the hub? Not accidently connected to an uplink port on the hub? Only things I can think of off the top of my head.

yea..i tested each cable with my cable modem. The link lights do light up and blink whenever I send a packet (both ways). And I tested my HUB on another network. And I tested both NICs by connecting them to my cable modem.

Disable the firewall if you have one and you should get pingability right away.
I have the same problem and disabling my firewall I can ping right away. I am running norton firewall and have tried their fixes but must be doing something wrong as I still cant do the ping unless I shut off the firewall.

Are you using the same workgroup?
has the server got active directory installed?
is the server machine running as a domain controller?
these are all things that need to be answered before you can isolate the issue!!
also make sure the two nics are the same speed ie 100 mbs full duplex
