I'm using an SiS530 onboard card with and Axion CA1570 monitor. I have installed and removed and reinstalled the display drivers several times. Windows seems happy with all of the settings, but the resolution is stuck at 800 x 600. Whenever I try to change the settings I get the following message.:

'The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. Please check your display hardware in device manager.'

I check the device manager - which shows the drivers are set up for SiS530 and a 1280 x 1024 monitor.

What is going wrong and how can I fix it???

Any advice would be gratefully received.

It's not what you want to hear, but I would reload Windows from scratch at this point. Else I guess you can try finding updated drivers for the video card, that might help things out. Also try going into safe mode and see if you can change the resolution from there.

You might start at windrivers.com and follow the path to sis drivers and download the latest.
I would also set the drivers to 640 x 480 and cycle thru shutdown before reinstalling. If it won't go to VGA then delete from device mangler and reinstall latest drivers on hardware detect.
Also be aware that there are some drivers that must be added to the system first, then automatically load when the hardware is freshly detected. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Also, one thing that I do in rare cases when the drivers are all screwed up, I'll enter Windows in safe mode, and I'll go through and delete every device listed under the 'System Devices' heading. Windows will then be forced to set up everything again, without having to re-install.

Remove your Network Interface Card and see if the problem is gone. If yes reinstall it again. -------------------------

Are the correct drivers in for the monitor? Some monitors don't do to well with Window's default monitor driver. Good luck.

Check to see if Netmeeting is on or the remote desktop sharing is active. If it is, exit it and then try to change your settings.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou.

This problem has been driving me mad all day. I was 5 minutes away from reinstalling windows!
The culprit was Netmeeting and remote desktop sharing.
