My computer is currently unable to complete the boot process. I have AwardBIOS and when I go into the BIOS setup utility I notice that the setting for the Primary Master and slave are set to auto as well as the secondary master and slave.

I purchased a new sony dvd/cd rom player and after that my computer was unable to go through the boot sequence.

Can anyone offer some tips in getting my computer to boot or changing the primary master and slave so that my computer can read the devices?

Thanks

Auto uses what you have. That setting shouldn't be your problem.
Where did you put your DVD and what settings do you have on it and the rest of the devices.

check your jumpers for the dvd and the other device on the same ide channel you put the dvd on, one should be master, the other should be slave, if they are both master or both slave then you'll be in trouble

Or of course, try disconnecting all optical devices (CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMS, etc) and see if the POST will complete. If it does, then you know you have an IDE configuration issue.

Did you try cdogg's suggestion of booting without optical drives? Did it boot? If it did, why the new drive (was it replacing a faulty one or in addition to existing)? Have you another optical drive you could try instead (to see if new one is faulty - which does happen, I had one just recently).

Presume you have checked the jumpers are all ok?

And you didn't actually tell us how its configured (eg, if just hard drive and one optical drive would assume hard drive primary master, optical secondary master - but you might have them on same cable as primary master & slave).

Right, we need to know what devices are installed on each IDE channel - the primary and secondary.

Also, we need to know which devices are master and which are slave. If you only have one device on a cable, make sure you have it connected at the end of the cable and not at the middle connector (it also must be set to master).

Try different configurations as well. Some devices don't play well with others, or they must be set to master when paired up on the same cable. Usually only trial and error will tell you which ones. The main hard drive should be left as the master on the primary IDE channel.
