I am running Backup Exec 8.6 on Windows 2000 server and I am trying to backup Exchange 2000. Backup Exec worked fine until I upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. I do have the correct backup Liscense for Exchange 2000. I ensured the login attaching to the mailboxes have appropriate permissions. The backup log shows that it verifies mailboxes and information store, but it failes because of this error message.

Unable to attach to \\<Server Name>\Microsoft Exchange Directory
The device cannot be found.

Unable to attach to \\<Server Name>\Microsoft Exchange Information Store

The backup log shows that the mailboxes are being backed up.
I have circular logging disabled and the log files are being flushed. I have changed my registry value for anonymous access. No matter what the back up still fails. I have looked all over Veritas's web page to no resolve. Any help will be appreciated.

Just a few things to check.

1st. Remember you can't backup exchange unless Veritas backup Exec. Is installed directly on your Exchange Server. I would assume you have made sure of such since you have used the Veritas software before you upgraded and you were able to select that server to be backuped remotely or locally.

2nd. It may help to Recreate the Backup jobs for the Exchange Server after the upgrade rather then using the ones that had been created before the upgrade.

3rd. You could try and attach the DLT drive directly to the Exchange server and see if it is able to be backed up then. Our current setup has a DLT drive just for the Exchange server to avoid sending all that information across the network.

4th. After Upgrade it may be wise to reinstall the Veritas Backup Exec. Software on the Exchange 2000 computer to ensure it is installed and properly set for Exchange 2000 components and such..

5th. Let me know how it works.. and what caused it if any of these work. I will be upgrading from exchange 5.5 to 2000 very soon and would like a heads up just in case I run into this same issue.

Thanks for the advice but I have already tried all of your options and it still failed. I uninstalled it before the upgrade and then reinstalled afterwards. I recreated all the jobs, BE 8.6 is installed directly to the Exchange server. The tape drive is on the Exchange Server itself. When i go to my make my selections for my job definition it sees all the mailboxes. I am stumped...
