unable to add collection

When I try to create a collection I get the message "this collection name is already in use. Use a different one" The collection doesn't exist in the colleciton list, but in the past I had tried to create a collection by the same name but during the process SMS froze. Where can I delete the invisible collection and why does SMS freeze whenever I add a collection?
