Hello

I have a user who VPNs onto our network, after she disconnects from the network she is unable to use her own internet connection to access her emails and browse the web.

to give you an idea of what is happening and what I have tried so far read the emails below:

(She has also complained that her PC comes up with warnings that she has multiple IP addresses, whilst on the VPN)

E-Mail I received:
Hi James

I am still having the same problem as last time though. I look at my e-mails first and then I go into concorde (via the VPN). When I go out of concorde I need to turn the computer off and on to be able to send and receive e-mails.

thanks for your help!

I replied with a possible solution:
Morning Esther

I believe the underlying problem is that when you connect to the VPN it assigns you a 2nd IP address. This is completely normal as your own ISP will assign one address to your PC, and the VPN server will assign it one to identify it on our network here.

It possible may require just a "Repair" on the Local Area Connection....

After you have signed onto the VPN/AT&T and disconnected, can you try the following for me please….

If you go to the Start Menu > Control Panel > Network Connections…

Right click "local area connection" and choose Repair.

Then check if you can get your emails normally without rebooting.

Thanks

I got a reply this morning:
Morning James

Sorry didn't work. I tried both internet and e-mail after the repair but got message: 'server could not be found'. I had to turn the compu off and on to be able to send you this message.

I still get the message: 'your pc has multiple IP addresses. You should only have one connection activated at a time. Pleast unplug your network cable or disable your wireless network connection'.

Can I do something with the plugs under my desk to change them or unplug when I go into concorde?? Or any other suggestions to solve this?

Thanks!
Esther

Has anyone got any solutions for me to try or has anyone encountered this problem before?

Many Thanks
James

Hi,

What VPN Endpoint/Server are you using ? What VPN software is your user using ? Sounds like her PC is not releasing the IP address of your VPN pool and as such, she can't access the 'net with a private address. ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew should do the trick but the software should take care of this automatically. Is she by any chance using the Cisco VPN Client ? If so, how is she 'disconnecting' ?

Regards Colin.

Colin - We use AT&T Global Network Client, and she is using the same. Yeah thats what i was thinking, which is why i asked her to try the repair but it didnt do the job. She isnt using Cisco VPN client, and she just disconnects by using the disconnect option in the AT&T Menu.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

Hi,

After disconnection, that VPN adapter should not have an IP address (I'm thinking of my Cisco Client VPN here). Hmmm. Can she try right clicking My network Places and disabling the VPN adaptor straight after disconnecting from the VPN and then trying to connect to the 'net ? Not the answer, more of a 'work around'. Her PC should automatically detect the 'net via the Belkin router she has.

Regards Colin.
