Unable to access databases setup SQL 2008 R2 Express

An application was installed on our server. I was given the sa password that was used to install it, but it does not work. I can connect to that server as a domain admin, yet cannot access any of those databases. I cannot reset the sa password, I cannot add my domain account as sysadmin, nothing.

Any suggestions? It's a live database.
