openbsd is supposed to be indestructable, why doesnt everyone run that? also i have been informed that bsd is more mature and stable/secure to linux and that linux code is sloppy, is this correct? are bsd's faster than slackware/debian/redhat?

Hi,

There are advantages to BSD variants and they have some very capable people doing the development. I wouldn't say linux code is sloppy but, with thousands of people developing for linux with all different levels of experinece you are bound to be able to find something that looks a bit dodgy. Linux code is much more visible than others and bugs are invariably fixed much faster as a result - I'd like to look at internal M$ equivalent of the LKML !

Like linux, it is somewhat fragmented as you have FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD available. It all depends what you want to use it for - if its a server environment with something like apache then it may be one of the best choices. The legendary M$ use of FreeBSD still persists even today -->

Linux, however, has considerably more apps available, much more support, etc.

There are megaflamewars about this anywhere you look.
I find that bsd is not any safer when new features are
added than linux. Linux just develops at a much acc-
elerated rate. See the unix focus section at:
for comparable exploits for both.
Speed: I've heard that linux suffers from little
latency problems that bsd does not suffer from.
I'va also heard that linux' throughput is superior
in the first place. Who knows?

As ifincham says: The applications available for linux
are the strength and weakness of linux: there are tons
of people writing application code, some of which is
unsafe.

Safety also depends on the people running the box.
I know a netbsd box run by an isp has had the same
public finger listener open for years, and offers
telnet access to this box. I dare say this is a
"unsafe" bsd machine. It has been rebuilt several
times I understand.
If you harden your linux box and run it minimally
you basically have a bsd security modeled machine.

the main reason i was told it was insecure is because linux code is not audited and bsd code is.
