Recently purchased an Ultra 10 (440mhz 512Mb RAM, 9Gb disk) from Ebay. Seeking advice from folks who've been down this road before.

1. DISK - Would like to add a 2nd drive or possibly just replace the 1st with a bigger one. I'm planning on reinstalling the OS anyway (I come from an HP environment, need to ramp up on Sun/Solaris9). How large a drive will this box recognize? Looking at Seagate 80Gb if it will work. I read on another post someone said it "officially" only works with 2 x 20Gb. Any experiences with larger?

2. RAM - May add more memory to give it 1Gb. Do I need Sun-specific DIMMs? Crucial is way expensive, and Kingston site lists 128Mb kits only.

3. KVM - I need a KVM switch that will allow me to use my PC video, mouse and keyboard. (Have 2 other Intel boxes besides this Ultra 10) Does this mean I need a multi-platform KVM switch? Cybex has a nice 4-port multi-platform
box but at a hefty US$349. Are there more cost-effective options?

Thanks for sharing your advice and experiences.

1, Not sure. I have added 2 x 20GB IDE drives to mine without issues.

2, You will need SUN specific RAM.

3, You will need to have a KVM that will support the use of the SUN Keyboard since the mouse PS2 is on the keyboard.

That's a real good machine. You done good! I have the same box, also from eBay.

1) I have two Maxtor 80 GB drives in mine. They seem to format down to something like 74.55 GB each, but all of that seems to be useable.

2) It will go to 1GB max. Make sure you're not already full of smaller SIMMs. They don't have to be Sun SIMMs, but they need to be right for the Ultra-10. You can get these on eBay too. Check Sun's web site for documentation on what you need to get. They have full documentation on this machine on their web site.

3) Sun has a converter to use a PS/2 style mouse and keyboard on a Sun system. You can find these on eBay. Look for "X465A" under the Computers section. These seem to go for under $100 on eBay.

Hope this helps.
