Hi all,

I have a friend who has phoned me today and said that her pc is infected with a virus.

After a few questions over the phone I've found that she has been infected by the Ultimate Defender and onlinesecurityworld.com spyware programs.

Now I live over 100 miles from this friend so I've done a quick search on google for stringers for these infections but each one I've come across does not seem to be the safe to download.
I was just wondering if anyone has any legit stringers for these programs?

Thanks Graham.

Did you mean "Stinger" instead of "Stringer"? If not, what is a stringer program?

You could suggest they try this free online scan (it scans for viruses, spyware, grayware, pretty much anything and everything - and it will actually remove the infections if so desired - for FREE! No strings attached:

That would be a start. Where as installed apps may not can find certain files, since the infection programs will sometimes change settings to be able to hide from them, it's kind of difficult for them to hide from an online scanner - or at least it would seem that way.

Then, you could get her to try using AVG Antispyware, Ad-Aware 2007, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Between those 4, you can just about take care of any spyware app.. If nothing else, they should at least be able to get rid of most of her trouble.

Also, this thread in another forum lists a specific download or two to fix the ultimate defender problem:

Yeh your right sorry for the typo should be stinger.

I have suggested that she does this but seems that the infection is effecting her broadband connection as well e.g. redirecting her homepage
Have run AVG both antiv and spy but while they have found a good few items the problem is still there.
So it might be time to format the pc.

Thanks for the help

Graham

If you are able to send a CD to her, you could create a DBAN disk, and mail that to her, and let her format with that to be sure to get rid of all her plagues. I'm guessing that she'd likely have more than just 2 spyware apps if it's causing a lot of trouble.

Also, if she already has the other scanners installed, has she tried booting into safe mode, and then scanning?

Just make sure to reminder her of backing up her data before reformatting - such as emails (if local email app), internet favorites, any pictures, music, etc.

Do you know if she uses the Yahoo! toolbar? That comes with a copy of Norton Antispyware and I've found that to be really useful in situations where AVG didn't take care of it (personally I don't hold my breath with AVG).

Hi all,

Sorry for the late reply. It appears that I've sorted the problem. I found a fix on beepingcomputer and ran it on a test pc that I infected with ultimate defender and then ran a scan using trend (Thanks kjv1611) and removed any latent infections.

Got her to run this on her pc and it appears that it has sorted her problems.

Thanks again,

Graham

Yay!

Yes, I've referred to bleeping computer before for a few headaches, based on Google searches. [smile]
