UK Law regarding keeping messages

I have just completed Exchange 5.5 Concepts and Admin, during the course the instructor stated that the e-mail admin was repsonable for keeping copies of all e-mails for 3 years under English law.

Is this true and does it apply to N. Ireland, Scotland and wales.

It is called the RIP Act 2000. The Act calls for a 12, 36 or 60 month data retention period to combat terrorism, provide proof of dealings and contracts and will be a nightmare for most email admins.

I assume this means that it is not yet law in the UK.

As far as I know it is with the Lords at the moment. 99% certain it isn't law - there was an article about it in one of the trade mags a month or so ago.

Let's face it, if it becomes law and you have to keep all emails for more than a couple of months, every mail server will need to double its HD space and it'll be a nightmare!!!

And if you run out of room on yr mail server running Exchange you are in deep do-do!
