We use ufsdump/ufsrestore for backups. I'm not too sure how it all works as it was set up before my time! I just run a script in cron each night.

When I do a ufsrestore ivfs /dev/rmt/0 1 on one of the dumped volumes, I get the following information;

Verify volume and initialize maps
Media block size is 126
Dump date: Thu Mar 22 18:00:33 2001
Dumped from: the epoch
Level 0 dump of /sybfiles on myserver:/dev/dsk/c1t2d0s5
Label: none
Extract directories from tape
Initialize symbol table.

I was looking at this the other day and wondered ... does anyone know where it gets that name the epoch?

Any pointers appreciated.

Greg.

Don't know exactly, but epoch is defined as:

'a long period of time, esp. one in which there are new advances and great change'

Sounds like one of those quasi-academic things so beloved of those early unix pioneers! I suppose a level 0 dump could be described as including everything from the year dot! Hope this helps.

the epoch is the beginning of time ... effectively

the last time you did a level -1 dump was indeed the epoch, since you can't really do a level -1 dump :)

Thanks guys. That now makes sense!

Greg.
