I'm totally new to this, and don't have the manual pages at hand.
Is it possible to restore a single file from a tape made with ufsdump?

Yep, use ufsrestore x filename, or perhaps ufsrestore i which would give you an interactive session and allow you to choose which files to restore. Annihilannic.

Just to expand slightly, you may find it useful to find out how to present the filename (ie possibly ./filename for example) with:

ufsrestore -tv

where the t asks ufsrestore just to show the files on the tape, but not restore them. HTH.
