To answer the question on communications, it depends on how they are set up. They could be set up H.323 or MGCP.
Either way you won't hurt them by changing the password on the Gateway. CallManager doesn't use a password to talk to them. CallManager uses either the IP address for H.323 or the hostname for MGCP.
