Ubuntu server enable 2nd eth port??

I manage a Dell R510 server running Ubuntu 9.04 (old yes, stable yes) and I would like to enable the 2nd eth port with a differnt IP address.

Seeing how this is a server it has no X server running so configuration is all CLI. I've modified the /etc/network/interfaces file to include the eth1 (in addition to eth0) along with the appropriate other parameters. But when I try to run ifup on that port both ports become unusable.

Can someone please review for me the steps necessary to properly define and enable the 2nd eth port on this server????

Based upon experience (as in I have done the same thing Ubuntu server edition) I am guessing that you defined a gateway for both interfaces. You can only have one default gateway, which is where traffic that is not bound for your networks will be routed to. The second interface can only route to the network / mask combination that it is attached to.
