You know in My Computer in most versions of windows.
You can either open up multiple windows OR you can browse single/same window.

Does anyone know how I can get to this in the registry to toggle it, because we run a restricted desktop and these multipe windows are doing my nut in. I NEED TO TURN THEM OFF Arrgggghhhhhh!! :)

Thanks in advance

Simon

You mean you haven't got access to Folder Options (from the view menu in explorer?)

i've just tried find the key using regmon.

the 'key' that got created was:
0xC11F0788\CabinetState\Settings

^^whatever the hell that it???

you might be able to get the folder options back with this key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoFolderOptions

change the value to 0 ===============

To Wolluf

YES I have access to Folder options. BUT like I said in my opening txt, we run a restricted desktop and the optins under Folder Opions are greyed out.

Thanks BroWolf. I tried this. The option was set to 0. I set it to 1 but there was no change. I still get the multiple windows Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I hated them :)

Browolf/Simon - I was trying regmon too (but must admit, often get confused by the amount of detail!). But looking at your post (cabinet starte) and my regmon again, I get this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState
Has a Binary Value Settings. When its set to open folders in same window, the value of this key is:
Settings: Hex 0c 00 01 00 0a 01 00 00 60 00 00 00
in different
Settings: Hex 0c 00 01 00 2a 01 00 00 60 00 00 00

So, I'd suggest editing this hex value so 0a in there - if rest of your binary value agrees (seems to work on my machine, though after a delay).

that makes more sense Wolluf :)

when using regmon, i usually get to the place where i want to see what changes and then turn on the capturing in regmon and then
press the buttons and then immediately turn off regmon.

^^you get less stuff to sift thru.

I don't get it.

Admin sets no access to folder settings yet access to registry???

A BIG BIG BIG note of thanks to you all. It looks like Wolluf has saved the day. Those windows were driving me nuts. I pop in to the reg changed the cabinet state to 0a and that cracked it. :).

Just to answer some questions that were thrown up. We are Netware, are desktops are restricted and delivered by NAL. I have an open desktop which allows me to run other apps. BUT the desktop settings are mainly greyed out. It is a Windows 98 box and I am able to run Regedit and adminsier my own registery. Hence I knew that this setting of the multiple windows would be accesable in regedit.

Thanks though to you all

Simon
