What are some of the typical hardware issues yo have seen since you have been working on computers. I am talking basic stuff like keyboards not working dirves not working. I am looking for hardware related not OS related. I am putting togeaher a training guide for my company and am looking for other hardware issue.

If this "training manual" for your company is not intended for the average users (ei: secretaries, finanal dept, cashiers, etc.) then I would add some of the following:

Video display too small -- (setting is 640x480--need to increase...minimum should be 800x600)

Not printing to (network) printer -- (check cables are securily attached in back, IP addy is correct, drivers installed, etc.)

Keyboard not responding -- Static discharged into KB circuitry: unplug KB and reinsert; if still no good, save open programs with mouse then Shutdown and restart.

The KB static problem happens quite frequently in one of our departments. I've tried getting anti-static materials or static dischargers; but the powers that be don't want to listen nor spend the money. It is aggravating to say the least.

Actually it is intended for less technical users. My help desk has user who are not as technical as they can be. They do know what it "takes" to get the job done and that is all. I am to provide guidance and training to help expand the knowledge base so we do not log as many calls for the desktop support team to go fix. the help desk consists of around 1500 users with different computers and different OS's. My first class is basic hardware TS. though most of the lesson plan is done, I a still looking for what others are seeing.

Thanks.

Basic sequence of TS steps. Power application and what to expect. Lights, fan noise, HD windup and recal. Everything that happens up to the processor running and putting a page on the screen

Processor action, display and CMOS capability. Those items that are involved with intitial video.

POST activities and what to expect.

Those items required to load the OS.

If they have an idea about what steps are normal they won't get sidetracked by what isn't important. I've found that users can find hundreds of suspicious symtoms that happened for something as simple as the power cord got jerked out.
