Type on a Path option

I'm running the Education version of Illustrator CS2 on a PC and can't use the Type on a Path option because it's grayed out under the Type menu. Can anyone straighten me out?

Show your Tools palette. Click and hold to see options. Select the type on path tool and use it. Remember, you have to create a path for it to follow first

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4
