Hello,
Hope all is well.
I have installed MySQL 4.x version about 4 months ago in a Red Hat Linyx 8 system.
A "find / -name mysql" returns:

/usr/bin/mysql
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/mysql
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/DBD/mysql
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/mysql
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/DBD/mysql
/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/share/mysql
/usr/include/mysql
/var/lib/mysql
/var/lib/mysql/mysql
/var/lock/subsys/mysql
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql
/etc/logrotate.d/mysql
/root/.cpan/build/DBD-mysql-2.9003/lib/DBD/mysql
/root/.cpan/build/DBD-mysql-2.9003/blib/lib/DBD/mysql
/root/.cpan/build/DBD-mysql-2.9003/blib/lib/auto/DBD/mysql
/root/.cpan/build/DBD-mysql-2.9003/blib/arch/auto/DBD/mysql

1. Was this a source or binary installation?

I've gone into the /var/lib/mysql/mysql & it shows files with extensions of .frm, .MYD, .MYI.
2. Are these the SQL databases?

Thanks!

Gabriel

Glad to be here!

1. Since I see no source files, it was probably a binary installation.

2. MySQL stores a database as a directory on the filesystem an tables as files. What you are seeing are the table files. The ".myd" files are the data, the ".myi" are indeces, and the ".frm" files contain metadata.
