Type In Prompt Size

Is there a limit to the size of a type in prompt. I created a prompt for an item that is 60 characters long. When I type in a value it only accepts 56 characters in the prompt. The advanced portion of the prompt setting says it is a Char type 256 characters in length. The database datatype is Char*60. Why does it only let you enter 56 characters. Is this the limit for prompt values?
