Crew,

I have a stubborn Text Box in a CD Insert Booklet design, that...no matter what I do, or how I attempt to format...certain lines of type are separated by a larger than normal horizontal space (which looks...well, non uniform.)

I created the box with the Type Tool; & entered type just like I always do...but this box is just formatting weird.

Any way to select all the type; & set it back to normal horizontal spacing?

Thanks,

Sonic Max

Just realised you may not be familiar with the term 'leading' and may interpret my answer incorrectly. Leading is the space between lines of type (NOT paragraph formatting, but the distance between one base line and the next). In AI9, this is shown on the Character Toolbar as two letter 'A's sitting on horizontal lines, one above the other. There is a double-headed arrow stretching between those two lines. This is the leading control. Click on the right arrow and you wil see a choice of leading measurements. The 'auto' is usually 120% the size of the font used e.g. 10pt text will have 12pt leading. It can be increased or descreased to get the lines of text further apart or closer together.

Eggles,

Are you sure this isn't a leading issue?
Well...I'll never know. Last nite after I posted, I went back; & I had to change the order of the list in question to be alphabetical. When I did, it fixed the problem (& all leading was set to auto...which defaulted to 7pt.)

I did notice however (before doing so)...that when I showed the Hidden Characters, the Showhides (the reverse "P" paragraph formatting characters) adjacent to the problem lines, were larger than others. Would that be an indicator of a leading problem?

Thanks very much,

Sonic Max

>>when I showed the Hidden Characters, the Showhides (the reverse "P" paragraph formatting characters) adjacent to the problem lines, were larger than others.<<

Yes. That sounds as though the problem was a leading issue - or could you have had an extra return between each line of text? Anyway, glad you solved it.

>>it fixed the problem (& all leading was set to auto<<

As it should be, unless you want to deliberately increase or decrease the spacing between lines of text.
