Are there problems with other types of selections as well? What happens sometimes when shooting for a particular keyboard shortcut, a user will overshoot and end up hitting Ctrl-H, which will hide all signs of selection. Hitting it again will bring it all back.
If that doesn't do it, try deleting the aiprefs file.
