Hi Quick question, can IBM type 1 cabling be used as Cat5 to run VCVoice over IP, my manual says to use CAt5 but the customer wiring is IBM type 1..... can it be used?
While there is no doubt that the "IBM type 1 days have come and gone" that does not mean that it is not reusable.
Type 1 is two shielded twisted pairs, 22 AWG solid copper conductors. With impedence matching it should be able to support a 100M data connection quite handily. There is very little crosstalk in a Type 1 cable.
I certanily would not install any more Type 1 but reuse falls into a different category. If all the parts are still there and in good condition I would check with a company like the link above to check it out. Depending on prevailing rates in the area reuse may not save much money since the baluns seem to cost around $75 a cable.
The best thing to do,as said above,is to run new Cay5E or Cat 6, and not worry about it. The cable advised to use is Cat5e and this is because you are running voice over the internet (data) and it may require all four pairs for packet confirmation during use. (the mix of a broadband application (voice) and data)
You would be OK using the Type 1 if it was just for normal voice applications.
Type 1 is good up to 400 feet per cable run but was designed for the 10mps token ring applications and is no longer supported by IBM.
If you are intent upon using the Type 1,you can get adaptors that will allow you to plug in cat5 patch cords at the ends, one for the computer and the other for the switch/router but this would be purely a measure to go if the client insist upon using the existing cable with no warranty the VOIP would work. If you can still find these, the cost may be up to where converting the cabling cost more than new runs/panels/ect.
You would just have to 'try it' and see what happens.
