We have DB2 6.1 on an AIX system. Is it possible to put DB2 7.1 on that same system? What are the pitfalls? What special precautions should I take?

Thanks for any information you can give me.

Yes, you can run both versions on AIX. I've also done this on Solaris.

The major levels (6/7) install the code in seperate directories (i.e. /usr/lpp/db2_06 and /usr/lpp/db2_07_01 on AIX, /opt/IBMdb2/V6.1 and /opt/IBMdb2/V7.1 on Solaris).

Be sure to apply FixPak2a or higher.

Create new userids for the instance owner and fence user. I recommend new groupids, also. The default users are db2inst1 and db2fenc1. In our DEV environments I use db2inst6 and db2fenc6 for V6, db2inst7 and db2fenc7 for V7.

If you use the DB2 Administration Server, only 1 can run on a host. If you want to use the V7 db2admin, stop, then drop the V6 db2admin before creating the V7 db2admin.

System resources are the only other isssue. There needs to be enough memory as disk space to run both instances. The V6 instance may need to be scaled back to allow resources for the V7 instance.
