Hello,
I have a client who uses two usb drives alternatively for backing up the data on a xp pro machine. Though the usb drives are of the same make they get different drive letter.

The client runs a backup program where the drive backup letter has to be defined, the problem comes here, as the backup drive letter changes each time its plugged in, the backup cannot run.

Is there a way to make both usb drive be detected to one drive letter? Is there any xp update for this issue?

Regards,
MJ

Not sure if this will work, but try opening diskmgmt.msc specifying the same drive letter for both drives. Of course, you can't do this when both are plugged in at the same time.

cheers.

See if anything here can help you?

Drive letter assignment

"When a USB storage device is connected to a Windows® XP system, Windows® will install the device dynamically using generic USB mass storage device drivers. Once a drive volume is installed, the file system will attempt to mount the device and assign it a drive letter. If the device had previously been given a drive letter, it will be assigned the same drive letter again (if available). If the USB device has not been seen before, it will be assigned a new local drive letter which will be the first one above the last local drive letter starting from A: or C: (if available)".
