Two PageMaker 7 Windows system problems

I am a long-time PageMaker user (V1), but I have two dilemas with V7.

1: My Open Publication dialog always starts in C:\program files\common files\adobe\files. Not very convenient. I would like to start in e:\, where my PM files reside. Designating e:\ as the startup in my shortcut doesn't work.

2: When using Save for Service Provider, the linked files are copied to my service provider directory, and then are immediately copied a second time, forcing me to approve the overwrites. Exceedingly annoying for complex documents.

Any fixes for these irritations?

Hrm.. It sounds like PageMaker isn't exiting correctly.
This is a long shot, but it's worked before.

1.Go to File>Run then type in Regedit, click ok.
2.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>ADOBE>MEDIA BROWSER and on the right hand side, delete the Key titled Plugins. Restart the machine and see if your pagemaker now keeps it's default location.

Good luck!

Bob: close but no cigar. Now PM opens in C:\My Documents. Better, but not really what I want.

hawkster,

After you open and save a doc, PM will go to the directory every time after. Unfortunately, due to MS Windows restrictions you cannot change the default directory. You can thank Bill gates for that.

There are some registry hacks that you could attempt, if you insist on changing the default directory... it isn;t wiorth it to me. And,if you are using PM7.0, you can lose the save & save as functions by changing your My Docs directory. Again, thank Bill Gates. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Here's how I start up PM in the directory of my choice. On my desktop, I have a folder that contains all the startup shortcuts for my Adobe products (PM, PS, ACRO, Illus, etc). Select the PM shortcut icon and Right Click. Choose Properties. In the Properties Menu, select the Shortcut Tab. In the "Start In:" box of the Shortcut Tab, put the directory you want PM to always look in first (such as O:\15c\Data\) After PM starts and when you open your first document, the Open folder will be in the desired directory. This little trick will work in almost all programs.

Now "Save and Save As" are a different matter. I have been doing quite a bit of research over the past week to learn how to make PM7 save back into the originating directory after I've opened a PM6.5 doc, modified it, and am ready to save it back to the originating directory. But, the save directory defaults to C:\My Documents\ and I have to drill back into my desired directory. We have converted from PM6.5 to PM7 and now have to undergo a serious document conversion. I can deal with onesy twosy saves but when I have ten or more docs that need to be converted and stored back, this bug is a real pain. If anyone knows how to Save back into the originating directory, after a conversion, rather than C:\My Documents, I would really appreciate the advice. [peace]

The My Documents problem is haunting a lot of people... if you change the defaults, esp in W2K, but even in 98 with PM7.0.. you quite often lose the 'save' and 'save as' fucntion. There are tons of posts on the Adobe forum concerning this... I still don't think I have seen an answer that works for everyone. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
