MX
ok i have a Primary Zone in my DNS server, that zone (itesi.edu.mx)has its own MX record for the Mailserver(Exchange , someone@itesi.edu.mx), but we want to setup a subdomain (al.itesi.edu.mx) for a new mailserver(qmail, someone@al.itesi.edu.mx), but when i test the domain al.itesi.edu.mx (using DNSreport.com) it says , al.itesi.edu.mx does not exist, no mail can be sent.

i want to delete all of the subdomain records and do it again cuz i dont trust the guy that did that hehe.

can anyone tell me , first of all, is this possible(i guess it is), and how i must setup all records.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but DNS servers are not my area so im not familiarized with setting up records and trouble shoot

Hi!
What type is your DNS server - BIND or Microsoft?
If it is MS, what is the server OS - W2K, or W2003?
Here is what I get when I perform nslookup for itesi.edu.mx:

> set type=mx
> itesi.edu.mx
Server: 192.168.2.1
Address: 192.168.2.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
itesi.edu.mx mail exchanger = 10 mail.itesi.edu.mx.
itesi.edu.mx mail exchanger = 5 mercurio.itesi.edu.mx.
itesi.edu.mx mail exchanger = 9 rhaes.al.itesi.edu.mx.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
itesi.edu.mx nameserver = venus.itesi.edu.mx.
itesi.edu.mx nameserver = mercurio.itesi.edu.mx.
rhaes.al.itesi.edu.mx internet address = 148.235.82.75
mail.itesi.edu.mx internet address = 148.235.82.68
> set type=ns
> itesi.edu.mx
Server: 192.168.2.1
Address: 192.168.2.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
itesi.edu.mx nameserver = mercurio.itesi.edu.mx.
itesi.edu.mx nameserver = venus.itesi.edu.mx.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
> al.itesi.edu.mx
Server: 192.168.2.1
Address: 192.168.2.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find al.itesi.edu.mx: No answer

Authoritative answers can be found from:
itesi.edu.mx
origin = venus.itesi.edu.mx
mail addr = dnsmaster.itesi.edu.mx
serial = 141
refresh = 900
retry = 600
expire = 86400
minimum = 3600

Do you get the same answer, when you run nslookup locally on your DNS server?

I cant find any records for your new sub domain al.itesi.edu.mx

What you need todo in your primary zone is create a new domain called "al" within that zone you will need to setup MX records and A records that point to your mail server.

If you tell us which DNS server you are using we would be able to give you more help on how todo things.

Thank u all, and heres some data.

the DNS server is MS DNS server, on WIN2K, and well, the person in charge, as u can see on the nslookup already has the records for the Mailserver (hostname rhaes) and the subdomain, but it isnt working properly.

the DNS servers(Primary and Secondary) are mercurio.itesi.edu.mx and venus.itesi.edu.mx

Thanx

Ok now i have all my records inside my Subdomain, and Mailserver is running just fine,

Thank you all very much, now im researching a little more on DNS servers.

But i have another question, i tried to send mail from another itesi.edu.mx subdomain (admin.itesi.edu.mx) and when i did that, the Mailer-daemon said "cant find al.itesi.mx in DNS server" thats something really weird because, averyone(hotmail, yahoo, etc.) can send mail to the qmailserver in al.itesi.edu.mx, but when i try to send mail from an account of itesi.edu.mx (the MS W2K Exchange Server ) to al.itesi.edu.mx (qmail) Fails.

Hi!
Check what DNS server the MS W2K Exchange Server at admin.itesi.edu.mx is pointing to.
If it is pointing to another DNS server which has a primary zone for itesi.edu.mx but does not have a child zone admin.itesi.edu.mx then this is the reason for your problem.
