Two Linksys Routers want to use RIP

Hi

I have two Linksys routers: BEFSR41 and BEFW11S4 v4. I would like to use the RIP protocol so they can talk to each other.

The BEFW11S4 v4, is in my computer rack and I have it connected to my SBC/AT&T DSL modem. The BEFSR41 has access to one of the BEFW11S4 v4 ports. The BEFSR41 sits on my desk so I can connect my notebook computer and PDA to the network. The BEFSR41 is presently being used as a hub not as a router.

Just check your Linksys manual under "Advanced Routing".

If you do not have your manual just go to

and enter the model number and they will have a link to the manual on PDF.

From the PDF - Dynamic Routing. With Dynamic Routing you can enable the Gateway to automatically adjust to physical
changes in the network’s layout. The Gateway, using the RIP protocol, determines the network packets’ route
based on the fewest number of hops between the source and the destination. The RIP protocol regularly
broadcasts routing information to other Gateways on the network. To enable RIP, click Enabled. To disable RIP,
click Disabled.
• Transmit RIP Version. To transmit RIP messages, select the protocol you want: RIP1, RIP1-Compatible, or
RIP2. If you don’t want to transmit RIP messages, select None.
• Receive RIP Version. To receive RIP messages, select the protocol you want: RIP1 or RIP2. If you don’t want
to receive RIP messages, select None.

It is very simple - just a check box as I remember it.

Make sure WAN port of 2nd router has IP in same range as LAN on 1st router. You can just turn on DHCP and it will get an IP and gateway etc from the 1st router. On the 2nd router make sure the LAN IP address is in a different range then the IP range for the LAN on the 1st router.

While you are at the Linksys site you might want to check that you have the latest greatest firmware - each link has firmware info also.
