Hi,

In our network there are two Internet gateways. One of them is 192.168.0.6 ADSL (3Com SuperStack3 Firewall) and the second is 192.168.0.7 CableNet (3Com OfficeConnect Firewall).

Default gw is 192.168.0.6. But sometimes it is down.

How can I make settings on the W2k3 server to be able to have a system that automatically changes the gateway when one of the Internet connection is down.

Thanks in advance for your help...

Regards!

You can disable the automatic determination of the interface metric and type a new value for the interface metric. If multiple interfaces have the same lowest interface metric, the default gateway of the first network adapter is used. The default gateway for the second network adapter is used when the first is unavailable.

To access the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box

In Control Panel (default view), click Network and Internet Connections.

1. Click Network Connections.
2. In Network Connections, right-click the local area connection you want to modify, and then click Properties.
3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
4. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, click Advanced.
5. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box appears.

If you plan instead to assign one or more static default gateways to an interface, you can use the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box to do so by selecting Add beneath Default gateways. When you enter the static address of a default gateway, you can also indicate if you want that static default gateway to have an automatically assigned or a static metric. If you want a static metric, you can specify that metric in a text box.

Thanks for the reply.

What will be the Routing (DHCP setting) and the DNS setting of the Server?

The IP of the server is 192.168.0.100

With these settings will all the clients autoatically switched to the next gateway.

Regards!

with dhcp, you should tell the dhcp clients to use your own internal dns server, which should have the isp dns servers as its forwarders.

add both gateway IP addresses in the scope options on your DHCP.....
client will have both addresses, if one is down, 2nd will be used.
if your server is a dns server, then dns=192.168.0.100

some routers allow for the configuration of more than one route to a destination...
simply add another route to the internet from gw1 to gw2
when the line stuffs up it should route traffic to the next gateway.. use tracert to check its working proprly..

good idea, but
Default gw is 192.168.0.6. But sometimes it is down.

i'd do that to try and make use of both gw, but the need is for the clients to be aware of both in case of .6 crashing...

From my experience with 2 gateways/broadband lines with different metrics, the machines will rotate which router they use for Internet access, but should the gateway/line they are using go down, they do not recover, and jump to the second gateway without a reboot. There are gateway routers designed for fail over, which accept two broadband lines, though I have never used one.

Thanks for your help. I tried the solution of "aftertaf (IS/IT--Manageme)".

I can see that all the clients have taken the 2 gws as 192.168.0.6 and 192.168.0.7.

I did not make any settings on the clients.

When I unplugged the ADSL line, it did not automatically try the second gw. I waited for more than 10 minutes. :(

My server is a DNS server, so I set it as 192.168.0.100 on the DHCP settings of the server.

I do not have any chance to buy any hardware to do it. I have to do it on W2K3Server.

Regards!
