hi there,

os: windows 2003
exchange 2007

Our exchange server is running out of space, so we would like to install another exchange server and divide the mailboxes between two..

how can i acheive this?
is the best solution to install all role's on both server..
how can the routing be done...

thank you

ameyuk

That's something that some planning would determine. You haven't supplied enough info to determine. Why not hang more storage on your existing server? Why is it growing? What are your retention limits?

hi,

its growing bcos we dont use quota and reducted retention limits to 5 days, reduce limits on log files etc.. adding more storage not possible as we used all drives..

thank you

Ok, so not having quotas is just asking for problems. What happens when a virus or malware breaks out? A single infected user could then take down all other users housed on databases on that LUN.

If server processing power is adequate, you can always add iSCSI storage to the existing server.

But, to answer your initial question, Exchange will handle routing between servers if you add another server. You can't really add all of the roles without doing more planning, such as how are you going to handle OWA and EAS when the connection comes in to one server, but the user's mailbox is on the other?

What MAY be a good solution is to build a CCR solution using two new servers, migrate the mailboxes to it, then remove the mailbox role from the existing server. But more planning is needed.

the problem is in few months the organisation is gona divide into two still under the same domain atleast for a year.. so we felt we take this opputunity to divide the mailbox's into respective organisations..

how do i go about mail flow, do i still need to install all roles on the new server how can i share the public folders and how can i make outlook look for mailbox on second server it it doesnt find it on the first one..

thank you

Yes, you can still install all roles on the second sever, as well as create public folder replicase on the second server. But you realize you can't just take an Exchange server and make it part of another organization, right?
