maczen,

Good post, these both look interesting!

We should have more book reviews here! I am looking forward to your reviews of these books!

Just a thought, I am sure that most of us read more then the average bear :)

Too bad there isn't a section like the FAQ and Links on Tek-Tips we could use for doing our own book reviews.

Ya.. Basically all you can do is select book review when you post and people have to archive it.. not quite as good

Burt,

Tea and biscuits sounds real good right now - I am GLOWING right now and must avoid people and can not eat for another 2 hours, they said online contact is ok - you guys can not get the radiation :) ( FYI: I have a hyperactive thyroid and just took a radioactive iodine pill that will destroy my thyroid over the next 6 weeks and then I will have a hypoactive thyroid which is EASIER to treat!!!) I just got home from Tampa General Hospital Radiology Department - out patient - took 1 pill that they had in a lead container!!!

I would love to see them discuss Cisco IOS, IP security or VoIP on the View :) :)

Or ..... we need a view with Bill Gates, John Chambers, Berners Lee, Steve Wasniac and so on!!!!

Just some thoughts!

That would be an awesome episode!

I would be nervous taking a radioactive pill! Let us know if you suddenly develop some secret powers.

You know who I would have liked to see write a book? Cap N Crunch! You know the guy with the whistle from the cereal box that blew exactly 2600hz!!! Damn whistles cost like $30 each now! LoL

Nice post in that forum CiscoG!!! I was posting when you submitted yours!!! Down for maintenance now!!!

There are sample chapters available for the NMAP book now but I am guessing that it was not released publically in September.. Can't find it on Half, eBay or even Google.. LoL

Taking on too much to try to tackle Linux Security just yet but will attack that soon enough!!! Have to play with the server setups I have now first!

Another REALLY good book is availablke here.. I ordered a copy recently!

LAN Security: What Hacker's know about your Switches!

Even sounds cool! It's a 2007 publication but comes highly recommended from Cisco!

I need to get that book. There was a posting recently too on the Cisco Learning Network about hacking switches. I love tormenting my co-workers with MITM attacks using either Cain and Abel or Ettercap. Lots of fun to redirect them to other websites or inject stuff into web pages.

I haven't gotten far enough to setup the squid server then flip all the pictures on the web pages upside down.

My favorite was the time I pulled it on my co-worker, he had just gotten done with a packet analyzer course, so I knew he was taking a trace. When he started yelling over that he caught something, I started scrambling to cover my tracks. Best part..he sent me the trace but was looking at the total wrong stuff. All he saw was the html packet that called the image I injected from his anonymous FTP server.

I started rolling after the fact about it. He totally had me busted with part of it, just needed to look in the right place to see the poison arp.

I'm surprised that no one has said anything about Snort yet.....I've got it running @ home on my *dows box (hey they can say *ix) and once you get that bad boy setup the IDS is remarkable....

I tried getting Snort up awhile back. Had a little trouble, but my home network wasn't really setup at the time for it to run accurately. About to the point I'm ready to tackle it again though.

I did find a really cool script to run against it to test the rules base. Of course...not sure where that script went to now.

lerdalt,

I have SNORT running through my IPCop firewall, very cool, love to check the logs. I also get email letting me know when to update, since I have the free SNORT, you can do updates after 7 days.

Just some thoughts!

I must admit that setting up SNORT for the first time is almost like trying to learn what every wire on your power supply goes to...yeah it can be done but it's very time consuming...get a book or read alot or find a friend that has set it up and pick their brain. And then just to top it off your going to want logging sent to a server and thats just about the same amount of time you spent on SNORT.

Bobby,

I guess using SNORT through IPCop must hide some of that from me because all of it was setup within IPCop, you just had the option to pay for updates right away vs waiting 7 days for the free updates. I took the free updates, not real worried on my home network if the IDS signatures are not up-to-date exactly as soon as they come out - now if I was a business or worried about intrusions - I would pay for the up date service.

IPCop lets you view the log in a tab on the IPCop admin screen - real easy to work with it this way!

I have got to say that IPCop is a very good firewall, I even saw it listed in one of the network mags when they were doing a story about a business setup, the business was using IPCop as the firewall in the network right along the Cisco routers and switches just as the next story had PIX or ASA firewalls in place.
