I already have a small network running windows active directory. I want to have a linux box. I have tons of questions, but first...Can I have two computers with one monitor and just switch them? I've seen it done with windows servers, but I want to mix them. Is there any special hardware I need?

Thanks.

A KVM switch (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) will do what you want. For only 2 machines, you can find something inexpensive at BestBuy or any online hardware retailer.

Also, make sure to read the specs on the KVM - they are not all created equal. Specifically - look to see what resolutions the KVM supports.

IE if you like to run your screens at 1600x1200, the KVM should should be capable of that resolution too.

Awesome. Thanks guys (or girls, whatever the case may be)!

Secondly, you can use vnc to connect to the other computer from the first computer.

Don't cut cost here and buy a cheap mechcnical switch box. You should get one that has the active electronics that emulates the Keyboard and Mouse at each output so that the servers can boot independently. Also allow for posiable expansion and get a few extra outputs. I have had good luck with Belkin KVM's and they are very cost efective as well.
