I have two computers that I would to "network", i.e. cable together so that I can use both for the same dial up internet connection.
Both of these computers have dial up modems and use the same telephone line.
If I tie these computers together with a cable, should I disable the the non-host(client) computer's modem? I do not want to do this because at times I would like to use the client computer on the internet by itself.

You need either a broadband or DSL internet connection with the appropriate hub's/routers to share an internet connection.(plus separate cables(ethernet) to each PC, equipped with ethernet card). You can connect the modems to the same telephone line but can only use one at a time, as you probably already know.

You can actually set up ICS (Internet connection sharing)with a dialup modem and share it thru a switch or cross over. You would need nic (network interface card) in the computer with the dialup connection. This is a complicated setup and is really not worth it as the server computer would need to be on and connected all the time and it would be SLOW. I doubt your gettting more than 45kbps on your dial up now. You dont want to be dividing this between computers.

As toolman suggested the bestway would be to get DSL or cable service and use a router switch combination and go wireless or wired ethernet.

Hope this helped.

What's up with these sponsored link pop-ups theyblock half of what i'm trying to read.

you can also buy a router with a built in 56k modem to share a dialup internet connection

you could then hook a wireless access point up to it if you wished

works just like the broadband one only twice as much $$$$
