Two and three columns report in the same report

I have to layout two grids in the same report. One uses two columns and the other one uses three columns. Number of columns is a property of the report not of the grid. I haven't been able to make it work with sub-reports either. If the main report uses one column (default) the sub-reports show one even that they are 2 and 3 columns. Thanks.
