Twinax connections over two servers?

Hi,

We're looking at getting a new iSeries (820), along with a new patient management software suite. As it stands, we are running an AS/400 model 500 currently running a different patient management suite.

Half of my clients are running TCP/IP, so I know that we can connect the two servers there, but what can I do about my twinax clients?

I need to know if I can link up, as it were, my two servers so that my twinax clients (dumb terminal and emulation PC's) can access one or the other depending on the program they need. Is this something simple? Or do I need to run two separate twinax lines to each terminal (say it ain't so!).

Thanks all for any insight you may have.

WOW,,, sitting here thinking about it,,,do you know anything about the ICF. That was a feature called Inter-Communications Feature. It lets you "network" multiple machines. I remember seeing it about the 34 and the 36,, so I am assuming that it stayed somehere in OS400. I would check on the IBM website, and see if maybe there is a Redbook, about it. The thing is,,, with a dumb terminal,,, you do not get a choice what machine you signon to. It goes to the one it is connect to. I will be real interested to see if you get any more responses..

I'm learning more about the AS400 every day, but still I'm at basic administration tasks, although I've survived through two upgrades and some hardware replacements! :)

Never heard of ICF, but will look it up or try to find something similar. I was thinking that maybe you just connect the master controller to one of the other server's lines, but that sounds too easy and simple; not the IBM way!

It would mean a kind of "pass through" connection, I guess?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know if I find anything!

As long as the two AS/400s are connected, you should be
able to connect to one server via Twinax (or TCP/IP) and
then pass through to the other AS/400.

Thanks all for your replies. After hearing of the solution I feel kinda stupid for not coming up with it sooner.

Anyway, I have either the option for a pass through connection through some kind of null device or even using TCP/IP between the two servers. I also have the vendor of the new software already setting up the scenario to make it easier for us to transition between the two servers (noted that I put 820; meant 810).

Again, Thanks.

I have a question,,,, since when have dumb twinax terminals been about to telnet.????? Every time I turn on a "dumb" terminal,,, it looks for line sync,, and if it does not find it,,, poof,,, no connection..

You're right. Telnet only applies to TCP/IP connections, or through TCP/IP over Twinax I'd guess.
