Turning off workgroups in MS Access 2003

I have an MS Access 2003 application that has a workgroup assigned to it (not the system.mdw). It is compiled into an .mde file for the users. Development, of course, occurs in the .mdb file. We have shortcuts that handle the connection to the workgroup file.

I want to remove the workgroup so anyone opening the source can do whatever they want. Even the .mde could be run by anybody. I will be handling user access to it via another method when I'm finished.

The problem is that whoever originally created this db and instituted the workgroup is no longer around. I have been trying for hours to figure out how to crack/disable this with no success. I am using a very good text as a guide (Microsoft Office Access 2003 by John L. Viescas) but it assumes that you are the owner of the db and its security to begin with. It also assumes that what you want to do is setup the workgroup -- not delete it.

There is no way for me to determine who the owner is so I can't set myself up into the correct mode!

Even if I could, I don't see anything that says how to turn off the workgroup once it's created.

PS I tried merely clearing the passwords. That allowed me to open the app without the '/wrkgrp' command argument in the shortcut but I can't edit the backend vba code!) I would have to close and reopen the db in exclusive mode. I know that a 'normal' access db defaults to exclusive mode when you open it (using the shift key).

I have programmed access apps for years and never used this workgroup so I don't know how to undo it.

Thanks in advance,
Jerry

Can you import all the objects in a brand new non-secured db ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

Yes I can but it takes too long that way. I was hoping there was a way of turning off the workgroup requirement after the fact.

Thanks,
Jerry
