I was configuring a Linksys WRT54Gs Ver 6 - 1.50.8 with my laptop. That was done.

Now My wireless Connection on my laptop is DISABLED, the "Turn WLAN On" is greyed out.

I have tried and tried to get the WLAN enabled with no success AT All.

Please help !!!

Windows XP Pro. Compaq 2000 Laptop.

Could you list the methods you have used, please?

1) I've reinstalled the DRIVERS,
2) Deleted the Wireless from Networks on Device Manager, windows re-installed the Wireless but shows the same "WLAN: DISABLED".

3) I've called Compaq Support and they had me download NEW drivers, installed those and same.

4) Reset the Lynksys Router and started all over. Same
5) Got another computer and set up the Router. The laptop still does not ENABLE the wireless.

Those are the most significant steps I took.

any ideas?

The button for the wireless on the Laptop does not ligth up. if I press it once it shows "WLAN: Off" if I press it again it shows "WLAN: DISABLED".

Thanks.

Sounds like you've tried all I would - except the BIOS - unlikely to have defaulted to off though (assuming it's a built-in mini-PCI device) but worth checking, nevertheless.

Can you borrow a USB or Cardbus to try?

Have you uninstalled the device in Device Manager then rebooted, allowing Windows to reinstall it?

How about physically removing it then reseating, checking that the aerial is still connected?

Yes, I uninstalled and rebooted. But did not work.

I dis go into BIOS and everything was ENABLED.

Now, this is was I just did: I Disabled The NETWORK CONNECTION (local area Connection) then I Disabled WLAN connection and clicked on the Wireless Icon on the Taskbar and there it was !!!! the "TURN WLAN ON" was NOT greyed out.

It seems that BOTH, the LAN and the WLAN MUST be disabled for the "TURN WLAN ON" not to be greyed out.

Well, thank you for the help SATROW, and I hope this thread helps others like me that got overwhelmed and it wasn't so complicated.

How come the experts at Compaq didn't come up with a solution SO SIMPLE after talking to them for ONE HOUR !!!! Huuuuuummmm !!!

Regards

Hmm, Windows bug or "this behavior is by design", I wonder?

Glad you've a fix for it, whatever!
